Fed: Symonston chosen as ACT prison site
Symonston has been selected as the preferred site for the proposed ACT prison.
ACT Justice Minister GARY HUMPHRIES says the site, south-east of the city centre, was
picked over Kinlyside in Gungahlin.
Mr HUMPHRIES says the establishment costs at Symonston will be lower because it is
serviced by water, roads, electricity, telecommunications and stormwater.
A study indicated the cost of establishing Symonston was about $150,000 while setting
up Kinlyside could cost as much as $700,000.
The prison is expected to open in late 2001.
